Boxing is ruining peoples lives!
One sad story involved super middleweight Gerald McClellan, who received life-threatening injuries during a title fight against Nigel Benn in 1995. After the fight, McClellan had emergency surgery to remove a six-inch blood clot from his brain. Today, at the age of 30, he can't walk or care for himself, and is nearly blind and deaf. Each time something like this happens, there are calls for the elimination of boxing or at least the institution of reforms (such as frequent medical examinations of fighters and mandatory headgear). But, since the money involved and continued fan interest boxing still has plenty of participants willing to accept the risks, which is nuts! Boxing is ruining people's lives. Boxing is a dangerous sport and doesn't deserve funding. One study estimated that 400 fighters died as a result of injuries suffered in the ring between 1918 and 1981.
